The vulnerability that could allow an attacker to take over a server is reported to be in the file transfer function of versions 5.0, 5.1 and 6.0 of Microsoft’s IIS product.

Microsoft said in a security advisory that although detailed exploit code has been published for this vulnerability, the company is not aware of any active attacks.

“Microsoft is actively monitoring this situation to keep customers informed and to provide customer guidance as necessary,” the advisory said.

Microsoft said that it will take appropriate action, which may include a patch to be released in the next monthly security update or sooner if necessary.

An interesting read, anything we can do to reduce costs and improve the possibilities or functionality of the infrastructure has to be a good thing, particularly in the next generation data center? Could we see movements to virtualization of the data center? Where the data center follows the sun, not just the application? With the availability of this API, customers can choose cloud services that will enable the on-demand flexibility that they require, and the ability to move their applications in and out of internal or external clouds with the high availability, manageability and security that customers have grown to rely on from VMware.

We need to continue developing open standards to create new opportunities for end users and vendors alike, in terms of functionality in the virtualization platform as well as system provisioning and management. We’ll need to see what product developments these bring, the more we discuss the standards, the more we can meet end user needs, and create new opportunities for products and services in and around the cloud and virtualization.

Voltaire to use IBM’s iDataPlex server

The center, which will be based in Israel and available online, will offer developers, partners and IT managers an environment to integrate and fully test cloud-based solutions.

The center will be powered in-part by IBM newest iDataPlex dx360 M2 server, which features expanded memory from previous versions (128 GB); support for the new VMware vSphere 4^TM virtualization platform; and overall performance benchmarks recently listing the iDataPlex as the most power-efficient system among similar technology products, as compiled by SPECpower_ssj2008 benchmark¹. The new Voltaire-designed center will extend these advancements to all companies interested; for example, SaaS companies will be able to leverage the center to benchmark their applications, such as broadcasting services and gaming. Also, the new center will maintain a list of testing results and blueprints for the solutions created, providing a vital technical and marketing resource and best-practices guide for current and future cloud innovations.

How old is my Compaq/HP server – what should be virtualized?

The concept is for those management/inventory reports where you’re trying to establish where you are with the server estate for consolidation/hardware or server virtualization project.  They dates are of course a guide only, and referenced from the HP quick specs guide, they do not constitute the official manufacture date of your server, though HP or your service provider should be able to provide more information if required.

After publishing this Chris called me and asked what guide I used to determine if a server should be virtualized?

At the moment (though situations change as do standards), I’ve been thinking that anything older than a G4, shall we say 2004 should be virtualized.

At this point my business as usual mind feels horrified and notes that these servers work, they typically (if managed and maintained) need not represent a higher support cost than the newer servers and not everything should be virtualized – that 700GB file server might be best left as a DL380 G3 with 4x300GB drives rather than eating half the storage on my ESX solution. Anyway, many at this point would be horrified and state that everything can and they would be right in most cases, however, as a vehicle to moving towards that scenario, let me summarize my position:

• Servers of this age are fully depreciated or should be;
  • We have obtained value for money from the underlying asset – five years is a good run and virtualization could extend this at relatively low cost
• We need to examine the economics of running older servers;
  • Cost of upgrading components of servers older than 2004 will be relatively higher, as will support contract/warranty costs
  • Environmental efficiency issues – particularly if you take a x86 server from 1999 as a file server and establish a power usage to performance ratio 380w for 45GB storage for example.
• Specifications of the servers stated:
  • Covering as much of the server estate possible, without encountering those servers that might have a higher amount of RAM/Disk space etc to maintain the number of machines virtualized per ESX server. It’s fine to say we can virtualize a DL380 G5 with 600GB of storage, we absolutely can, but would I not rather get rid of 12 older machines that use more power, rack space and would consume less (as a percentage of disk space/memory and cpu) than a newer server?

What works for you will depend on your business, your internal standards and the individual applications involved.

HP ILO 2 updated to version 1.79

• Fixed an issue that would corrupt the iLO 2 firmware image if a Remote Console session was opened while the flash was in progress.

• Fixed an iLO 2 hang that would occur when the On-Board Administrator requested a server name change using a string larger than 32 characters.
• Fixed an issue where the iLO 2 would become unresponsive during a broadcast storm.  This could also cause the HP agents for Linux to seg-fault.

HP have announced version 1.79 firmware for their ILO2, check if it applies to your systems, and remember that having the latest drivers/firmware is the first thing the vendor (or service provider) will ask when logging a call.
